WAKING WALT by Larry Pontius
Review by: Linda Nelson
The Author says,"Could it be true; Walt Disney has been in cryonic suspension all these years?"
Harry Poole's life was a mess. Jobless due to cutbacks and the loss of his latest live in girlfriend, he found solace in a good cold beer and watching the Discovery Channel. Even the news that his Uncle, Dr. Arthur Nolan had just died didn't stir him emotionally, that is until he remembered that his uncle wasn't a real doctor, never having finished. And that wasn't all, the news that he had been left sole heir of a large sum of money and was expected to fly to California immediately to settle things, and that they were providing a first class ticket and a hotel reservation at the Sheraton Universal for the next day finally got his attention. Looks like Harry had been given another chance to make something of his life and Harry would be a fool if he didn't go and at least see who this mysterious Mr. Barrington was, after all what would be the worst that could happen?
Lisa Barrington is a brilliant driven attorney, partner in a Major Beverly Hills firm at thirty-five, and also heir to a large fortune. Being Robert Barrington's only granddaughter didn't hurt either. But living her life this fast and furious had cost Lisa. Lucky in business, but not in her personal life she was now recovering from her latest marriage breakup and hospital stay. Living in her grandfather's home and handling his business was not exactly a bad deal that is until he informed her of what being his sole heir really was about.
Now I have read many a mystery thriller, and this one has a delightfully bizarre twist. Usually books in this genre start out with somebody being murdered, a dead body is a must but in this book the dead body is going to be resurrected or at least that is what they want to do. A Circle of old men, wealthy and all holding a big secret, a secret that could change the meaning of what it means to be dead. With lively and often comic dialog we are given a glimpse into a wonderland.
Mr. Pontius'
voice is fresh, dealing with a serious subject of power and loyalty in a intriguing
mix of old and new ways. I really enjoyed this book, and even though I am slightly
bias as I live here in Florida where the influence of Walt Disney has made a large
economic impact, I think that if you are looking for something out of the ordinary,
something different then this might be the book for you.
